Seryum (IV) iyonu di\u011fer lantanitlerden daha \u00e7abuk hizroliz oldu\u011fu i\u00e7in KmnO4 y\u00fckseltgen ajan\u0131 ile tuzu halinde elde edilir.
\nDaha sonra elde edilen eritilmi\u015f tuzu (CeCl3) ve NaCl kar\u0131\u015f\u0131m\u0131n\u0131n grafit h\u00fccrede elektrolizi ile saf seryum elde edilir.
\nSeryum orta derecede toksik bir maddedir. 65-80 C de havada kendili\u011finde alev al\u0131r. \u00c7inko ile reaksiyonu sonucunda patlama olabilir. Bizmut ve antimon ile \u00e7ok ekzotermik reaksiyon verir.
