Karbon i\u00e7eren buluntularda eser olarak bulunan radyoaktif  (radyokarbon) izotopunun yo\u011funlu\u011fu ya da radyoaktivitesi \u00f6l\u00e7\u00fclerek buluntular tarihlenebilir. Radyokarbon tarihleme y\u00f6ntemi, bulundu\u011fu 1950 y\u0131l\u0131ndan g\u00fcn\u00fcm\u00fcze, yakla\u015f\u0131k son 50 bin y\u0131lda yery\u00fcz\u00fcnde meydana gelen arkeolojik, paleobotanik ve jeolojik olaylar\u0131n mutlak tarihlenmesi i\u00e7in kullan\u0131lan ana y\u00f6ntem durumuna gelmi\u015ftir. Arkeolojik kaz\u0131larda ele ge\u00e7en ve karbon i\u00e7eren her buluntu radyokarbon y\u00f6ntemiyle tarihlenebilir. Tarihlenmek \u00fczere toplanan buluntulara \u00f6rnek ad\u0131 verilir. Tarihlenecek \u00f6rnekler olarak a\u011fa\u00e7 par\u00e7alar\u0131, odun k\u00f6m\u00fcr\u00fc, kurumu\u015f bitkiler, tah\u0131l taneleri, dokuma par\u00e7alar\u0131, deri, hayvan kabuklar\u0131, kemik, yemek art\u0131klar\u0131 say\u0131labilir.<br \/>\n Uzaydan atmosferin \u00fcst tabakalar\u0131na gelen kozmik \u0131\u015f\u0131nlar\u0131n her y\u00f6nden e\u015fit miktarda geldi\u011fi g\u00f6zlenir. Bu nedenle  izotopunun olu\u015fma h\u0131z\u0131 ile canl\u0131lardaki yo\u011funlu\u011funun eski zamanlardan g\u00fcn\u00fcm\u00fcze ayn\u0131 olmas\u0131 beklenir ve b\u00f6yle oldu\u011fu varsay\u0131l\u0131r. Fakat  hemen par\u00e7alanmaya ba\u015flar ve atmosferde bir denge deri\u015fimine eri\u015fir:<br \/>\n 1 g karbon i\u00e7in 1 dakikada 15.3 par\u00e7alanmad\u0131r.  karbondioksidin yap\u0131s\u0131na girer ve fotosentez ile bitkilerin ve dolay\u0131s\u0131yla hayvanlar\u0131n yap\u0131s\u0131na girer. Bitki ve hayvanlar canl\u0131yken yap\u0131lar\u0131nda  denge deri\u015fiminde bulunur. Fakat \u00f6ld\u00fckten sonra karbon d\u0131\u015far\u0131dan karbon al\u0131nmas\u0131 duraca\u011f\u0131ndan zamanla  miktar\u0131 azal\u0131r. 5730 y\u0131l ge\u00e7ti\u011finde ise yar\u0131 yar\u0131ya azalm\u0131\u015f olur.<br \/>\n Atmosferdeki  yo\u011funlu\u011fu eski zamanlardan g\u00fcn\u00fcm\u00fcze de\u011fi\u015fmemi\u015ftir. Temel varsay\u0131m\u0131 do\u011frulamak \u00fczere a\u011fa\u00e7 halkalar\u0131 say\u0131m\u0131 (dendrokronoloji) y\u00f6ntemiyle ger\u00e7ek halka ya\u015flar\u0131 belirlenen y\u00fczlerce \u00f6rne\u011fin radyokarbon ya\u015flar\u0131 da bulunarak kar\u015f\u0131l\u0131\u015ft\u0131r\u0131lm\u0131\u015ft\u0131r. Ger\u00e7ek ya\u015f deyimi yerine ayn\u0131 zamanda takvim ya\u015f\u0131 deyimi de kullan\u0131l\u0131r.
