Ancak bilimsel anlamda y\u0131ld\u0131r\u0131m ile ilgili ilk tan\u0131mlamalar 17.yy.\u2019da ba\u015flam\u0131\u015ft\u0131r. \u0130lk olarak Descartes, y\u0131ld\u0131r\u0131m\u0131n bulutlar\u0131n \u00e7arp\u0131\u015fmas\u0131yla s\u0131k\u0131\u015fan havan\u0131n \u0131\u015f\u0131k ve \u0131s\u0131 etkisinin meydana geldi\u011fini ve \u0131s\u0131n\u0131n g\u00fcr\u00fclt\u00fcye neden oldu\u011funu s\u00f6yleyerek y\u0131ld\u0131r\u0131m ile ilgili ilk teoriyi ortaya atm\u0131\u015ft\u0131r. 18.yy. ortalar\u0131nda Rahip Nollet Fizik Dersleri adl\u0131 kitab\u0131nda elektrikle y\u0131ld\u0131r\u0131m etkisini anlatm\u0131\u015ft\u0131r. Bu tarihlerde Fizik\u00e7i Jalbert, y\u0131ld\u0131r\u0131m olay\u0131 ile sivri u\u00e7lar\u0131n ilgisini dile getirmi\u015ftir. Atlaman\u0131n ger\u00e7ekle\u015fmesi i\u00e7in, havada as\u0131l\u0131 duran bulutlar ile yer aras\u0131ndaki hava iyi bir iletken olmad\u0131\u011f\u0131ndan, yakla\u015f\u0131k 100.000.000 voltluk bir gerilim olu\u015fmas\u0131 gerekmektedir. Bulutlar\u0131n y\u0131ld\u0131r\u0131m \u00fcretmesi i\u00e7in \u00f6nce elektrik y\u00fckleri ile \u015farj olmas\u0131 gerekmektedir. Bulutlar\u0131n \u015farj olmas\u0131 i\u00e7in f\u0131rt\u0131na bulutunun yere yak\u0131n olan k\u0131sm\u0131 negatif y\u00fckle y\u00fcklenir (Bu durum her zaman i\u00e7in ge\u00e7erli de\u011fildir). Bu arada yer pozitif y\u00fckle y\u00fcklenir. Y\u00fcklenme hem bulut hem de yery\u00fcz\u00fcnde birbirine ters kutuplar olarak ger\u00e7ekle\u015fir.
