Örnek cümlelerde Bob ve Susan’ın ortak özellikleri her ikisinin de öğrenci olmalarıdır. Bu nedenle iki ayrı cümle yapmak yerine Özneler and bağlacı ile birleştirilmekte; fiil, özne çoğullaşmasına bağlı olarak is, are olarak değiştirilmekte, özne tamamlayıcısı da tekilden çoğula dönüştürülmektedir. Ayrıca, ikinci cümledeki too (de, da, dahi) sözcüğü işlevini yitirdiği için kaldırılmaktadır.
Mary is sick. Mary hasta.
I am sick, too. Ben de hastayım.
Mary and I are sick. Mary ve ben hastayız.
Betty is a pilot. Betty bir pilottur.
Ted is a pilot, too. Ted de bir pilottur.
